Luis Camilo and Sofia
Luis Camilo and SofiaI am supposed to write about the bike fitting clinic but I have to put my thoughts together on that first. Besides I can not think very well as I write this post, I am sick with a cold and have not trained in a couple of days. But let me go back to what has transpired over the past week or so. Last Wednesday I got back from the fit clinic and I was looking forward to a good week of training. There was no swimming in the camp and I was anxious to get in the pool. I think swimming has to be the worst sport to try to take time off. Just a few days off and some muscles atrophy as we never use them otherwise.

In any case when I got home Wednesday, Camilo who is my two year old son was sick with a bad cough and was having a hard time breathing. He loves to run around but he was forced to slow down by the lack of lung capacity. We thought of taking him to the hospital but managed to get a doctor appointment. The doc gave him some albuterol and said to keep an eye on things. He probably just has a lung virus or infection that will resolve in a couple of days. Not a few hours after Camilo was back from the doctor my daughter Sofia started to vomit and had a real bad diarrhea. Well although Camilo was still himself with a cold, Sofia was not herself at all. She just basically laid there and just wanted to be held. The next morning Sofia was still looking bad and after some advice from Ed who is one of my extended coaching athletes and a pediatrician, we took Sofia to the hospital. Sofia is only 11 months and apparently babies get dehydrated very fast. Sofia needed an IV. She was at the hospital at 8:00 PM and the people at the emergency room could not get an IV into her veins. Babies have so much fat and in her case of dehydration the veins get smaller. So Sofia got admitted to the hospital and it was not until 3:00 AM when they finally got an IV into her. Good thing I stayed home with Camilo as she got poked many times and started crying anytime someone came to the room.

Well Sofia stayed at the hospital for three days. They found out she had a ROTA virus. I stayed home bonding with Camilo. Hanging with him all day was fun but it was difficult to get any work done. That is for sure. Never mind any training. I only managed to ride the trainer once for an hour when Camilo went to bed. At the same time I started catching whatever Camilo had and things just got worse for me from there on. Now we are all at home happy but with some sort of cold. The one in best shape is probably my wife Kelly. No more pre-school or day care for this kids for a while. See, while I was at the clinic the kids went to day care and Camilo went to a pre-school for a few hours. That is where they caught all this crap.

I am trying to stay calm as I see my mediocre fitness dribble out of my toes. Just kidding; I think I will be ok. Besides this is sort of part of the deal. Even people without kids get colds. I am going to call it a forced taper.

So what do we do when we get sick? Do we train or do we not train. The general rule of thumb is that if your cold is from the neck up and you feel strong you can train a bit and it may even help. If the cold is below the neck and you have hard time breathing then it is definitely best to rest and not train. I am to the point that I am not training although I can breathe fine. I am just waiting to get better and trying to get some work done. Hey how do you like my mustache on my picture with the kids above?. I usually never have one or have even tried to have one but I am lazy about shaving when stuck at home. It is starting to bug me, I never had mustache hairs that touched my lips and it feels weird.

Stay tuned to my bike fit clinic post.
